As we struggle with COVID fatigue and the ongoing stress of traversing the unknown, we’ve been working hard to keep going; to stay safe, keep roofs over heads and stomachs full. We are here to support you in any way we can, but we also want to take a minute to help you step back and refocus.

We have been pushing through this year with the most vigorous determination we’ve seen our clients show, but determination isn’t just a skill or a habit, but a resource. The more we tap into it, the more it drains us and saps us of the ability to get that willpower when we need it. Determination is like a muscle; if you overwork it, the more you are to cause injury.

We also need to focus our efforts on goals or areas in something we really believe in. Having a single-minded focus where our heart doesn’t lie actually makes us less effective, which only drains us further. Research shows that when we quit pursuing unattainable goals, we’re happier, less stressed, and even get sick less often. Not quitting was associated with higher levels of depression, stress, and emotional upset.

As we make our goals in 2021, look towards our future and imagine what life will look like again after the pandemic ends. Remember to set goals we can achieve, focus our efforts on making a difference, and remember to take a minute to replenish ourselves.

We challenge you to do the following:

  • Rewrite 2020 goals to fit your future aspirations.
  • Let go of the regrets of last year and look ahead to what you can achieve.
  • Break down goals by week or month so you can make small steps to get to the big goal.
  • Send us your plan and let our caseworkers see how they can make it happen.
